A vehicular brake system (10, 110) having vehicle stability management (VSM) includes a hydraulic master cylinder (12, 112) connected to wheel brakes (30, 31, 128-131) via brake conduits (26, 124, 126). A pump (54) generates fluid pressures and pressure control valves (44, 46, 56, 58) located between the master cylinder (12, 112) and the wheel brakes (30, 31, 128-131) regulate the fluid pressures at the wheel brakes (30, 31, 128-131) to achieve ABS and traction control. A medium pressure accumulator (66) stores fluid pressurized by the pump (54) which is supplied to the wheel brakes (30, 31, 128-131) via associated control valves (70, 72) to achieve VSM braking control. The brake system has low power requirements because the medium pressure accumulator (66) does not have to be filled quickly, yet the stored pressurized fluid can be released to the wheel brakes (30, 31, 128-131) to quickly produce the braking pressures necessary for initiating most VSM applications. The pump (54) is used to supplement the accumulator pressures to achieve full VSM control.
|
