Pain or irritation of the eyes, caused by injury due to dry eye syndrome, chemical burns or the like can be accompanied by corneal stromal edema. It has been discovered that administration of thymosin &bgr;4 and/or oxidized thymosin &bgr;4 to cornea in need of treatment of corneal stromal edema is a useful treatment for decreasing such corneal stromal edema.
