The invention relates to a device intended for assisting the administrator of a sewer system in collecting information on the condition of the network in order to maintain the network in operating conditions. The invention involves using a set of observation devices mounted on a floating housing (1) connected by the rear (8) to a check cable which the operator can control from the surface upstream, and using a display and an optional recording system on the surface. The essential on-board devices include a directable surface camera housed behind a convex viewport (2), a bottom camera (3), distance detectors (6 and 7), a system transmitting wireless signals (5) and the lighting system, and are powered by batteries (4). The signals follow the main sewer to a receiver located at a manhole and from there travel to the observation and recording station on the surface. The selected devices are compact, reliable and preferably derived from mass-produced, commercially available devices such as video surveillance cameras, computers or video screens in order to ensure a low investment.
