PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve stable white balance using a simple constitution, in a projection type image display device having a light control function of a light source.SOLUTION: An optical engine 20 includes: optical modulation elements 5R, 5G and 5B respectively modulating R light, G light and B light; a polarization state adjusting element 5Ye, arranged at the light incident side of the optical modulation element 5G for G light and adjusting the polarization state of Ye light; and a color compositing part 60 for generating an image light, by color-compositing the light emitted from the optical modulation elements 5R, 5G and 5B. The polarization state adjusting element 5Ye is constituted to transmit the G light, while maintaining the polarization state of the G light, and transmit the Ye light by adjusting the polarization state of the Ye light, when the Ye light is made incident thereon, together with the G light. A control device includes a light source driving means constituted to adjust the emitted light quantity of the light source 50, and a modulation amount control means for controlling the device modulation amount to adjust the polarization state of the Ye light in the polarization state adjusting element 5Ye, according to the change in the light quantity of the light source 50 emitted by the light source driving means. |
