The method involves operating a cylinder (3) of an internal combustion engine (1) of a vehicle i.e. motor vehicle, consecutively for a time period of less than half second in a lean phase and a fat phase in order to provide an exhaust neutrality. An operation irregularity signal is evaluated in the lean phase in order to receive a cylinder-specific characteristic concerning the trimming of cylinder. The cylinder-specific characteristic is correlated with a measure for a fuel/oxygen ratio in the cylinder. An independent claim is also included for an electronic control device for controlling an internal combustion engine.
