PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the method which maintains the consistency between records and a file and manages the file format by linking a database operating process and a file operating process with each other. SOLUTION: A file abstract data type and an external file linkage function 343 are introduced into a DBMS and a DBMS external file management system 242 and a file converting function 243 are introduced so as to manage files under the control of the DBMS, and the external file linkage function 343 and the DBMS external file management system 242 are set so that they are properly linked with each other. Consequently, it is guaranteed that a file related to record is properly operated corresponding to the operation of database records that a DBMS user does, so the consistency between the database records and file is secured, so that even file attribute information such as a file content format and a file size can be managed by the DBMS.
