The assembly (10) has a transmission signal generator (1) generating an electrical transmission signal on a channel (14). A transceiver switch (2) provides communication between transmission and receiving signals. Controlled elements (31-33) of an ultrasonic transducer (3) transmit ultrasonic waves into a detected medium (4). An evaluation unit (8) determines an average sonic speed in the medium to a point reflector (5) and distance of the reflector from the transducer, and determines a variable sonic speed by determining reflector's parameters at various locations. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining variable sonic speeds and distances in media using ultrasound.
