A radio frequency identification (RFID) device (10) comprises: a substrate; a transponder chip; and an antenna coupled to the chip; wherein the chip is part of an antennaless device coupled to the antenna; wherein the antennaless device and the antenna are inactivated upon occurrence of a predetermined event; wherein the antennaless device remains readable when decoupled from the antenna; and wherein the device includes an alterable portion that is altered upon a predetermined event.
