PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active secondary alcohol compound industrially useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, or perfumes in a high optical purity by reducing an asymmetric ketone compound with inexpensive and easily handleble trichlorosilane. SOLUTION: An asymmetric ketone compound (e.g., acetophenone) is reduced with trichlorosilane in the presence of an optically active proline derivative (e.g., cis-N-formyl-α'-(2,4,6-triethyl)phenyl-L-proline) represented by formula (I) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a 6 to 12C aryl group).
