The device (1) has a book cover back part (3) having a back insert of a book cover (2), and comprising a deforming saddle that is pushed forward onto an inner side (5) of the book cover. The cover back part has a rounded portion located opposite to folding rails between a laterally opposing fold shaping rail (7) and another rail. The saddle includes two laterally and downwardly directed blades (8, 9) that lift the back part during deformation. The blades are pivotably constructed together about an axis extending parallel to the back part for adjusting rounding of the back part. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing books.
