[Also in Group XVI] Apparatus for cutting a web 3 into lengths comprises two rollers 1, 2 for advancing the web between a reciprocating knife 4 and stationary counter knife 5, and a stacker member 6 for feeding the cut lengths to a stack forming chamber. The knife 4 is provided with extensions 24, 25 which move in guides integral with the counter knife 5, and is reciprocated by means of a cam 15, cam follower 17 and two-armed lever 21. Resiliently mounted on the knife 4 and extending slightly forwardly thereof is a member 8 which serves to clamp the web against a plurality of spring-urged pins 12 mounted in guides 11 on the knife 5. Since the member 8 and pins 12 extend beyond the edges of the knives with which they are associated, they also serve to prevent the sticking of the web to either knife. The knife 4 also carries sheet stacking members 6 which deliver the sheets into a chamber formed by the underside of the knife 5 and a table 23, the position of which may be varied in accordance with the length of the cut sheets required. If a reduction of sheet length is required during operation, however, owing to a reduction in the length of successive printed parts of the web the frequency of cutting may be varied by means of a photo-electric cell. Guide-pins, one of which is shown at 28, are provided above the rollers 1, 2 for moving the web transversely in its plane in the event of misprints being detected by a photo-electric cell. A displaced pile 30 is thus produced which may be readily removed.
