<p>The device has a number of distance sensors (4, 6, 11, 13) arranged at a motor vehicle (1) such that the sensors read the surroundings of the motor vehicle. An evaluation unit (3) determines the movement path and the speed of objects relative to the motor vehicle using the data of the distance sensors. The distance sensors are selectively controllable using the evaluation unit, where the resolution of the sensors is changeable. An independent claim is also included for a method of detecting and tracing objects.</p>
