PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus that prevents the corner of the light source face end of a small-sized transparent original illumination unit from being in contact with an original film and damaging the film. SOLUTION: A part of a transparent original holder laterally projected from the edge of a hole is provided to a transparent original illumination unit at a position corresponding to an upper part of the edge of the hole of the transparent original holder for containing the film and the transparent original illumination unit. When the transparent original illumination unit is obliquely inserted, the projected part is in contact to the upper part of the edge of the hole and the corner of the light source face end is not in contact with the film.
