<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of efficiently manufacturing a lithium secondary battery having an excellent output characteristic, and a lithium secondary battery manufactured by the method. <P>SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing a lithium secondary battery comprises the steps of obtaining a battery assembly that includes a positive pole having a material capable of occluding/discharging Li<SP>+</SP>, a negative pole having a carbon material capable of inserting/desorbing Li<SP>+</SP>, and an initial electrolyte containing a cation having a larger diameter than the Li<SP>+</SP>(e.g. an alkali metal ion, such as Na<SP>+</SP>, or K<SP>+</SP>); and providing an initial charge to the battery assembly. The initial charge enables efficiently inserting the cation into the carbon material. This enables enlarging the distance between layers of the carbon material, reducing reaction resistance of the battery, and enhancing the characteristic of the battery.
