It is an object of the present invention to provide a transmission method and system for bit streams including picture data generated by carrying out encoding with which cost for bit stream decoding and/or bit stream encoding can be reduced. With the present invention bit streams are reproduced from recording media on which bit streams are recorded or radio wave using reproducing equipment having a bit stream reproducing function. The reproduced bit streams are transmitted via a high speed digital network (93; 103) and a bit stream transmitted through the high speed digital network (93; 103) are decoded or recorded using a decoder (95) having only a function of decoding the bit stream connected via the high speed digital network (93; 103).
