An elevator apparatus, wherein a plurality of cars are vertically moved in a hoistway. The cars are installed in the hoistway so as to be adjacent to each other when the cars are positioned at a same height. Where at least one of these cars is designated as a first car and the car adjacent to the first car is designated as a second car, a recessed part is formed in the side face of the first car opposed to the second car within a vertically projected surface, and at least a part of a car guide shoe is disposed in the recessed part.
