PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a route guide capable of efficiently avoiding congestions, in a navigation system. SOLUTION: This navigation system/route guide method is provided with a storage device 3 for storing link information correlated with information, indicating road classification of a link in each of the links in the navigation system for searching a recommended route up to a destination; and an arithmetic processing part 1 having a means for detecting the present position; a means of receiving, from an outside, road traffic information including information specifying at least the link under the congestion; a means of determining the presence of the link under the congestion in the recommended route, using the searched recommended route and the received road traffic information, and of searching a by-pass route toward the destination by by-passing the link under the congestion, when the link under the congestion exists, and a determination means for extracting a branch point branching the by-pass route from the recommended route; and for determining the propriety of adopting the by-pass route, based on the road classification of the link in the recommended route advancing into the extracted branch point, that is the link connected to the branch point.
