The backrest (7) has a parallelepiped cushion (13) integrated to a metal frame (11) by an articulation unit that moves the cushion between a standard seat backrest position and a raised seating position. The articulation unit is arranged such that a front face (13a) of the cushion in the standard seat backrest position is transformed into an upper face of a base in the raised seating position. The articulation unit includes a rotational axle situated on the metal frame to pivot the cushion between axes on the metal frame. An arm connects the cushion to the metal frame. An independent claim is also included for a method for transforming a backrest of a seat of a motor vehicle into a raised seat.
