The engine (1) has a crankshaft (10) rotatably assembled around a driving axis (A10). A shaft is rotatably assembled around a balancing axis (A20) and away from the driving axis. A coupling unit (30) couples a balancing device (20) with the crankshaft, and is provided with a disengaging unit (31) and a setting unit (40). The setting unit sets an angular position of the balancing device around the balancing axis with respect to the driving axis. An angular speed measurement unit measures an angular speed of the crankshaft. The disengaging unit is provided with two clutch disks. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an internal combustion engine.
