PURPOSE: A rack and pinion type steering apparatus is provided to prevent a metallic crashing sound due to direct contact of a ball housing and a rack housing since the ball housing makes contact with a damper ring right before reaching the stepped part of the rack housing. CONSTITUTION: A rack and pinion type steering apparatus comprises a rack housing(220), a ball housing(240) and a damper ring(300). The rack housing accepts a rack bar(230), which is meshed with the pinion of a steering shaft and makes linear movement. Stepped parts(225), which get smaller toward a central part in a diameter, are formed on both ends of the rack housing and a coupling groove(227) is formed on the central inner circumferential surface of the stepped part. One side of the ball housing is coupled to both ends of the rack bar. The other side of the ball housing is coupled to the ball part(270) of a tie rod(110). The damper ring is coupled to the inner circumferential surfaces of both ends of the rack housing.
