PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a cooling effect on optic components by simplifying an assembling structure of an optical compensation plate in a projection type image display device including a vertical alignment liquid crystal panel.SOLUTION: The projection type image display device includes a vertical alignment liquid crystal panel 1 that seals a liquid crystal between a pair of opposing substrates, a polarizing plate 2 disposed in the incident side of the vertical alignment liquid crystal panel 1, and a polarizing plate 3 disposed in the exit side of the vertical alignment liquid crystal panel with respect to the polarizing plate 2, with absorption axes 2a and 3a of the polarizing plates orthogonal to each other. A -C-plate 4 is layered on an outer surface of a counter substrate of the vertical alignment liquid crystal panel 1, satisfying a relationship of nx=ny>nz, wherein nx and ny represent refractive indices in x and y directions, respectively, within the film plane and nz represents a refractive index in the thickness direction of the film. Thus, the -C-plate 4 is disposed between the vertical alignment liquid crystal panel 1 and the polarizing plates 2 and 3. |
