PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high contrast of low luminance and high luminance parts while suppressing noise in the luminance parts, and to achieve the high contrast of the feature part of an image as well.SOLUTION: The image signal processing includes: a first area input/output characteristic control means which controls the change of input/output characteristics for each optional area in linkage with the value of an input luminance signal; a first area luminance signal correction means which changes the input/output characteristics of a luminance signal correspondingly to the output of the first area input/output characteristic control means; a second area input/output characteristic control means which controls the change of the input/output characteristics for each optional area in linkage with the output of the first area luminance signal correction means; a second area luminance signal correction means for changing the input/output characteristics of the luminance signal correspondingly to the output of the second area input/output characteristic control means; a chrominance input/output characteristic control means which controls the change of the input/output characteristics of an input chrominance signal, utilizing the output of the first area input/output characteristic control means and the output of the second area input/output characteristic control means; and a chrominance signal correction means for changing the input/output characteristics of a chrominance signal correspondingly to the output of the chrominance signal input/output characteristic control means.
