MONITORING OF ROTOR BLADE LOAD IN A WIND TURBINE

A wind turbine includes a rotor having a plurality of blades and a system for monitoring loading of the blades in both edgewise and flapwise directions and rotational loading. A rigid rod is fixed at one end within a blade at a point where the blade has an airfoil cross- section. The free end of the rod extends towards the root and terminates in a graduated or marked screen. An electromagnetic sensor such as an optical profiling sensor or a CCD imaging device monitors the screen and a data processor determines movement of graduations or mark(s) on the screen over time from data supplied from the sensor. This may be used to determine a measure of bending and provided to a controller which may respond by varying a parameter such as blade pitch or yaw angle when bending exceeds a predetermined amount.
