PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer and a paper detecting method that allow detection of a paperless state without detecting a prescribed amount (of the paperless state) when there is no label paper 2, in which each label piece 21 and each gap 22 between the label pieces 21 are provided and each label piece 21 is continuously and temporarily stuck on a mount 23 at equal intervals, during the transfer of the label paper 2 in a thermal printer 1 to be mounted with the label paper 2.SOLUTION: A first sensor 5 and a second sensor 6 are arranged on the same line in the width direction of the label paper 2. The output of the first sensor has a threshold X that allows determination of detection of each label piece 21 and each gap part 22. The output of the second sensor 6 has a threshold Y that allows determination of detection of the presence or the absence of the mount 23 of the label paper 2. Consequently, it is possible to detect the presence or the absence of the label paper 2, and also, possible to detect each label piece 21 and each gap 22 by one step drive of a pulse motor 12 without detecting each of them by a prescribed amount in the longitudinal direction. |
