The internal combustion engine (60) has a working chamber formed between two segment pistons (17a,17b), which are arranged particularly coaxially mounted on two hollow shafts (20,29). One of two gas exchange openings is integrated in the housings (16,19,26,27) temporarily for the working chamber during a movement phase of the segment pistons. An independent claim is also included for a combustion method used in an internal combustion engine.
