A focusing device is provided with: an optical system that includes a focusing lens; an image capturing element that captures an image of a subject, which is formed by the optical system, and outputs an image signal including a plurality of color components; an edge detection unit that detects the edge of each color component of the plurality of color components included in the image signal; a differential value calculation unit that calculates the differential value of the edge strength of the edge of each color component, which is detected by the edge detection unit; and a determination unit that determines, on the basis of the differential value calculated by the differential value calculation unit, the direction of movement in which the focusing lens is moved in order to focus the optical system.
