PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus of generating a ranging preamble code in a wireless communication system are provided to reduce the signaling overhead in the transmission of a control parameter which determines the starting root index of a candidate ranging preamble code. CONSTITUTION: A terminal receives ranging channel information from a base station(S100), and generates one of candidate ranging preamble codes as a ranging preamble code(S110). Based on the ranging channel information, the codes are determined. Among root indexes, the ranging channel information includes a start root index and/or a control parameter which indicates the start root index.
