<p>A database is provided in which an index (2) for the database is provided as a hierarchical structure of nodes that are navigated during a search until a conclusion set is reached, and the structure is organised such that key information relating to a nodes is inferred from the position of the node in the structure.</p><p>A method of organising a database is described, wherein the key used to navigate an index is a composite key, and one or more of the keys therein are represented in a compressed form.
