Forming a covalent bond between two groups having carbonyl residues, comprises reacting a carbonyl compound and an oxo carboxylic acid compound in the presence of an acid to give a hydroxyl-ketone compound and carbon dioxide, where the reaction is catalyzed by thiamine diphosphate-dependent Yersinia pseudotuberculosis(YerE) enzyme. Forming a covalent bond between two groups having carbonyl residues, comprises reacting a carbonyl compound of formula (R 2>C(O)R 1>) and an oxo carboxylic acid compound of formula ( ->O(O)C-C(O)-R 3>) in the presence of an acid to give a hydroxyl-ketone compound of formula (R 1>-C(OH)(R 2>)-C(O)-R 3>) and carbon dioxide, where the reaction is catalyzed by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis(YerE) enzyme.
