The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for transferring eggs from egg-trays to an egg processing apparatus, comprising the step of delivering trays of eggs to a pick-up zone, lifting the eggs from the trays using a first lifting device, and transferring the eggs to a re ceiving conveyor for further transportation to the egg processing appa ratus. The transfer step inciudes setting the eggs down on a positioning device, collecting them to form a larger array, lifting them from the po sitioning device using a second lifting device, and setting them down on the receiving conveyor. Eggs are preferably set down on the positioning device in small arrays, each corresponding substantially to the array represented by an egg tray. The positioning device preferably comprises holding devices, each for holding an egg and which are displaceable in relation to each other.
