A method of manufacturing a solenoidal magnet structure comprises the steps of providing a collapsible mould in which to wind coils 34. Then coils 34 are formed by winding wire into defined positions in the mould, after which a preformed tubular mechanical support structure 102 is placed over the coils 34. The coils 34 are then impregnated and bound to the mechanical support structure 102 by applying a thermosetting resin and allowing the thermosetting resin to harden. Finally, collapsing the mould and removing the resultant solenoidal magnet structure comprising the resin impregnated coils 34 and the mechanical support structure 102 from the mould as a single solid piece. The tubular support structure 102 may be split along its length, in the axial direction, to allow the structure to be positioned around and clamped on to the coils 34 and mould arrangement. The coils 34 may have different outer diameters and different separate support structures 102a, 102b, 102c or 102d and 102e may be formed with different corresponding diameters and suitably combined prior to the resin impregnating step. Superconducting wire may be used to form the coils 34.
|
