A refrigerator has a payload container 20 within which items can be placed for temperature-controlled storage. The payload container is submerged in a reservoir 12 that contains water. The reservoir has a cooling region containing the payload container and a headspace containing water that is, in use, higher than the payload container. A refrigeration unit 30 having a cooling element 32 can cool water within the headspace, and the refrigeration unit may use power supplied from a solar powered photovoltaic power supply. The refrigeration unit may include an electrically powered compressor, and the refrigerator may also include a freezer compartment 50. The refrigerator may be insulated, and access to the storage compartment(s) may be via an insulated door 24. The refrigerator may be used for the cold storage and transportation of vaccines. |
