The present invention provides a system and method for obtaining in vivo images. The system contains an imaging system and a transmitter for transmitting signals from a camera to a receiving system located outside a patient.

1. A swallowable capsule for imaging the gastrointestinal tract, the capsule comprising:
an elongated housing, having a longitudinal axis, comprising a single uninterrupted transparent dome shaped window having an apex located at an end of the longitudinal axis; an optical system located behind the single uninterrupted transparent dome shaped window and having an optical path along the longitudinal axis; an imager located behind the single uninterrupted transparent dome shaped window and imaging the gastrointestinal tract via the single uninterrupted transparent dome shaped window and via the optical system; and an illumination element configured to provide illumination in a ring around the imager and illuminating the gastrointestinal tract via the single uninterrupted transparent dome shaped window.
