The method involves separating an array antenna into multiple cascade mounted functional blocks. The blocks are independently characterized to obtain a matrix of parameters relative to each of the blocks. A matrix of parameters relative to the antenna is obtained using the matrices of parameters relative to the corresponding blocks. One of the blocks is formed by N radiating elements, where N is an integer. An independent claim is also included for a device for characterizing an array antenna.
