The tool (6) has a mobile support (24) supporting a bearing shell. A frame (22) is fixed on the casing in a predetermined position. A guiding mechanism formed of a lever (44) and a rod (46) guides the displacement of the support between a retracted position in which the support supports the bearing shell and an assembling position in which the support arranges the bearing shell on the bearing of the casing. An index (50) authorizes the displacement of the support till the assembling position when the support is opposite to the bearing. An independent claim is also included for a method for assembling a bearing shell on a bearing of a casing.
