PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily obtaining an optically active amino acid which is widely used as a raw material of a medicine or a pesticide at high purity and also in a high yield.SOLUTION: This method for producing the optically active amino acid includes the steps of: mixing a mixture of a D-optically active amino acid and an L-optically active amino acid with an optically active 4-methyl valeric acid derivative in an aqueous solution containing one or more selected from among a 1C-3C alcohol and acetone; then crystallizing it; and separating to obtain a diastereomer salt crystal comprising the obtained optically active amino acid and optically active 4-methyl valeric acid derivative.
