<p>Disclosed is a regenerator (10) in a heat engine that is provided with a plurality of layered metal meshes (11) for receiving and storing heat from a high temperature gas that flows from a high temperature space and for providing the heat to a low temperature fluid that flows from a low temperature space, wherein the metal meshes (11) are formed from a plurality of mutually parallel vertical wires (13V) and a plurality of mutually parallel horizontal wires (13H) that are orthogonal to the vertical wires (13V), and wherein the aforementioned metal meshes (11) are layered sequentially in the same direction with each layer being rotated a given angle.</p>
