Disclosed is a wire electric discharge machining apparatus in which a pulse voltage is applied between a wire electrode (1) and an article (2) to be machined to perform electric discharge machining, wherein the apparatus is provided with: a machining speed detection means (14) for detecting the relative machining speed of the article (2) to be machined and the wire electrode (1); a machining energy calculation means (13) for calculating the machining energy of the electric discharge pulse; a plate thickness calculation means (12) for calculating the plate thickness of the article (4) to be machined based on the machining speed detected by the machining speed detection means (14) and the machining energy calculated by the machining energy calculation means (13); a stationary state decision means (16) for determining whether or not machining is in the stationary state from the machining state during machining, after the machining conditions have been switched in accordance with the plate thickness of the article (4) to be machined calculated by the plate thickness calculation means (12); and a machining conditions switching means (11) for switching to the machining conditions corresponding to the plate thickness calculated by the plate thickness calculation means (12) when the stationary state decision means (16) has determined that the state is the stationary state, and there is no switch to the machining conditions corresponding to the calculated plate thickness when it has been determined that the state is not the stationary state.
