The present invention relates to the detection of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria. More specifically, the present invention relates to the detection of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria using specific oligonucleotide primers designed for this purpose. The primers may be for amplification of a conserved region of the polyketide synthase domain, particularly the ß-ketoacyl synthase (KS) domain, of the mcyD gene. The primers may be complementary to the conserved region of the ß-ketoacyl synthase (KS) domain of the mcyD gene of Microcystis aeruginosa strain UTCC 299. The primers may be for amplification of a conserved region of the first dehydratase domain of the mcyD gene. The primers may be complementary to the conserved region of the first dehydratase domain of the mcyD gene of Microcystis aeruginosa UTCC 300.
