A binding material for coke which comprises a matrix phase containing an aromatic compound bearing a hydrogen-donating naphthene group and carbon particles dispersed in the matrix phase, wherein the content of the carbon particles accounts for 20 to 50mass% of the total amount of the binding material and the proportion of carbon particles having radiuses exceeding 100µm is 10% or below. The binding material can inhibit the occurrence or growth of cracks in the process of manufacturing coke from a starting coal blend containing a non- or slightly-caking general coal.
