PURPOSE: An air conditioner and a method for detecting the malfunction thereof are provided to reduce time and labor by automating the malfunction determination of an indoor expansion valve. CONSTITUTION: A method for detecting the malfunction of an air conditioner is as follows. An indoor expansion valve of an indoor unit is opened, and the piping temperature of the indoor unit is measured(S220). When the piping temperature is approached to target temperature, the opened indoor expansion valve is closed, and the piping temperature of the indoor unit is measured(S230). The piping temperature of the opened expansion valve is compared with the piping temperature of the closed expansion valve(S270).
