The method involves connecting one or multiple cash box (200) with a bank note processing machine (100) in a detachable manner. The cash box is checked after inserting in the bank note processing machine, whether the cash box is functioning. One or multiple functions of the inserted cash box are tested. The inserted cash box is not used for the operation in the bank notes processing machine, in case one or multiple or all the tested functions are faulty. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a bank note processing machine with a control unit; and (2) a cash box with a storage.
