PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material not containing expensive noble metals such as platinum or an alloy of those and suitable particularly for an electrode catalyst for a fuel cell and the like.SOLUTION: The carbon material is obtained by firing an acrylonitrile (co)polymer composition comprising 100 pts.mass of an acrylonitrile (co)polymer containing ≥50 mass% of an acrylonitrile component and 1-150 pts.mass of a specific metallophthalocyanine at 500-1,500°C in an inert gas atmosphere, wherein the metallophthalocyanine contains a metal ion selected from the group consisting of Fe, Co, Cuand Niand has substituents X, X, Xand X(which are each a halogen atom, a 1-12C alkyl group or a 1-12C alkoxyl group and h, i, j and k (the numbers of the substituents) are each an integer of 0-4). |
