A transmission system includes an axle housing 12 having a sump 14 in which there is a crown wheel 16 that engages a pinion 28. A pump 20, flow diverter valves 22, 24 and pipes 30, 32, 34, 36 are operable to transfer lubricating oil, in dependence on vehicle operating conditions, from the sump 14 to a reservoir 18 or from the reservoir 18 to the sump 14. Alternative a reversible pump (120, fig 6) may be provided and operated to transfer oil in both directions. In yet another embodiment two pumps (380, 382) may be used for bidirectional transfer of oil. The axle housing 12 may contain the reservoir 18 or the reservoir 18 may be mounted on an axle arias of the axle housing 12. An inlet for the pump 20 is positioned in the sump 14 at a level higher than a bottom of the crown wheel 16. |
