A process for the preparation of a composition comprising hyperbranched polymeric compounds, which comprises a step of reacting a mixture comprising one or more compounds of the following formula (I):

wherein
A and B are functional groups,
R is an (n+1)-valent organic group containing one or more thioether groups and
n is an integer of at least 2 characterized in that
A is an amino group or a hydroxyl group, and
B is a carboxylic acid group or an ester or anhydride thereof,
under reaction conditions wherein A reacts with B and forms a linking amide group, while A does not react with A and B does not react with B.
