The present application relates to formulations having a decreased abuse potential. In a representative embodiment, the formulation comprises methadone hydrochloride (6-(Dimethylamino)-4,4-diphenylheptan-3-one, a synthetic opioid), meglumine, cellulose, lactose and magnesium stearate. The application further illustrates methods for making the formulations. The use of formulations comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of a narcotic drug having one positively charged protonated amine together with an alkalizing agent, for reducing potential for narcotic abuse is described.
