PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treatment method for improving adhesiveness of a carbon material to a resin while preventing damages to the base carbon material, the method which is as easy as a silane coupling agent treatment on a glass material, and to provide a carbon material obtained by the treatment method.SOLUTION: A carbon material is subjected to a surface treatment by coating the material with a fullerene derivative the outer surface of which has at least one divalent substituent expressed by formula. In formula, * and ** each represents a bond binding to an adjoining fullerene nucleus carbon; Rrepresents a 1-4C straight-chain or branched alkyl group, which may be substituted by at least one selected from halogen atoms, hydroxy groups, COOR, COSRand OR, wherein Rto Reach represents a 1-4C straight-chain or branched alkyl group, provided that the total number of carbon atoms including the number of carbon atoms of Ris at most 6. |
