PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treatment method for improving adhesiveness of a carbon material to a resin while preventing damages to the base carbon material, the method which is as easy as a silane coupling agent treatment on a glass material, and to provide a carbon material obtained by the treatment method.SOLUTION: A carbon material is subjected to a surface treatment by coating the material with a fullerene derivative the outer surface of which has at least one divalent substituent expressed by formula.
