PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which achieves viewing angle control in a light source and has high display quality.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises: a linear polarizing element 21 disposed between a light source and a liquid crystal display panel 1, where a transmission axis 52 thereof is aligned with the transmission axis 51 of a polarizer 11 arranged on the side of the light source; and a retardation film 22 arranged between the linear polarizing element 21 and the liquid crystal display panel 1. In the retardation film 22, the absolute value of the phase difference Rth in the thickness direction falls within the range of 400 to 800 nm, and nz>nx=ny or nz<nx=ny is satisfied. |
