The invention relates to a calender (1) for smoothing a paper or cardboard web (2), comprising at least one nip (3) formed between a heatable roller (4) and a counter element (5), a device (6) for generating a predetermined pressure in the nip (3), and a web treatment device (7) having two contact surfaces (9, 10) forming a treatment gap (8) and being arranged upstream of the nip (3). One of said contact surfaces is a revolving contact surface (9) formed by a band (14) revolving around guide rollers (11, 12, 13). The other contact surface (10) is formed by the rotating outer wall of the heatable roller (4). The treatment gap (8) extends along a grade (15) of the enlacement of the heatable roller (4), wherein, in order to increase the thermal efficiency of the heat exchange, the rotating band (14) having an elastic surface presses the paper or cardboard web (12) against the heatable roller (4), and the guide rollers (11, 12, 13) control belt tension forces of the rotating band (14) in the treatment gap (8).
