PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop an internal combustion engine after the valve timing of an engine valve is fixed at an intermediate position by detecting whether the valve timing is fixed at the intermediate position regardless of manufacturing error.SOLUTION: The control device of the internal combustion engine includes a variable valve timing mechanism 1 having a locking mechanism 14 capable of fixing the valve timing of the engine valve at the intermediate position. The control device determines, when the phase change of valve timing of an intake valve becomes a predetermined value or less while changing the valve timing of the intake valve toward the intermediate position based on detection of a stop signal of the internal combustion engine, that the valve timing of the intake vale is fixed at the intermediate position. After the valve timing of the intake valve is determined to be fixed at the intermediate position, the internal combustion engine is stopped. According to this, whether the valve timing of the intake valve is fixed at the intermediate position can be surely detected, and the internal combustion engine can be stopped after it is fixed at the intermediate position. |
